US Mint’s Liberty Coin Named Best Gold Coin in COTY for 2021-Dated Coins
The U.S. Mint’s 100 Dollar gold American Liberty coin was named Best Gold Coin in Krause Publication’s Coin of the Year (COTY) competition for coins dated 2021. The coin won handily, with a 36 percent margin over its closest competitor.
The highly detailed gold coin is part of the American Liberty series, which features modern depictions of allegorical Liberty on the obverse. In the winning coin, a bucking mustang is intended to be a “bold representation of the determination and power of the passion for American liberty,” according to the U.S. Mint.
The coin’s obverse was designed by Beth Zaiken and sculpted by Craig Campbell. It features Liberty as a wild American Mustang horse, bucking off a western style saddle. As described by the U.S. Mint, it “evokes the throwing off of the yoke of British rule during the American Revolution.” The horse is centered on a rising sun. The obverse inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2021.”
The reverse of the American Liberty coin depicts a close-up view of an eagle with an open beak. It includes the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ.,” “.9999 FINE GOLD,” “$100,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The sculptor was Phebe Hemphill, while the designer was Richard Masters.
The proof coin has a denomination of $100 and is composed of 99.99% gold. It measures 30.61 mm (1,205 in) in diameter and weighs 1.0000 troy oz. (31.108 grams).
