Archbishop Myers Dedicates New Church in Turks and Caicos
Archbishop John J. Myers dedicated the newly constructed Catholic church of Our Lady of Divine Providence at Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) on February 5, 2012. Damian Roderic Todd, the Royal Governor of TCI and over 700 people filled the new Church in Turks and Caicos, with Msgr. Peter Baldacchino presiding. Our Lady of Divine Providence is a Catholic mission that became part of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Newark in 1998.
Since then, two full time priests had been assigned to serve there in an open air church. As the island grew, the old church became much too small. In 2006 the Holy Family Academy opened its doors. The K-8 school now serves 75 students. Msgr. Baldacchino hopes to open a high school someday soon.Even though the new building has begun a regular schedule of masses, flooring, pews, bells, paintings, statues and other furnishings are still needed.
