Beatles Celebrate Sgt. Pepper Anniversary with Impressive Box Set
Fifty years ago, the Beatles made music history with the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. To commemorate the groundbreaking album, the band recently released a four CD box set that features a brand new stereo mix and a 5.1 channel mix. At over $100, the box set is expensive but well worth the price.
The new stereo remaster alone is worth the price of the box set. The 5.1 channel mix is the icing on the cake. These discs allow you to hear this classic Album as the Beatles would have wanted you to hear it on a 21st Century playback setup. The sound is amazing!
Released on June 1, 1967, Sgt. Pepper was the eighth studio album for John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr and their most acclaimed. It spent 27 weeks at number one on the UK albums chart and held the top spot in the U.S. for 15 weeks. In 1968, the Beatles won a Grammy for Album of the Year. Decades later, Sgt. Pepper earned the top spot in Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
The new Super Deluxe Edition of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band DVD + Blu-ray + Audio CD | 4 CD Box Set. is arguably the best version of the ground-breaking album, short of being in the studio when it was recorded. The centerpiece of the box set is a new stereo remix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, which was sourced directly from the four-track masters at London’s Abbey Road Studios. The box set also includes 33 tracks from the Sgt. Pepper recording sessions, giving fans an inside look at how Beatles developed the songs.
The first CD includes Martin’s new stereo mix. There are two CDs featuring 100 minutes of “Sgt. Pepper Sessions.” Newly mixed from the original tapes, the majority of the audio was previously unreleased. The fourth CD features the original 1967 mono mix of the album, along with several bonus tracks of previously unreleased mixes.
The remaining discs are Blu-Ray and DVD. In addition to a 5.1 surround sound mix and high-resolution stereo audio in 96KHz/24bit of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the discs feature the fully restored 1992 documentary, The Making of Sgt. Pepper. Promotional films for “A Day In The Life,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and “Penny Lane” are also included.
Finally, box set also comes with a 144-page hardback book featuring an introduction by Paul McCartney. With contributions from Beatles historian Kevin Howlett, composer and musicologist Howard Goodall, producer Joe Boyd, and journalists Ed Vulliamy and Jeff Slate, the book provides in-depth discussions of the album’s songs, cover art, musical innovations, and historical context.
