Austria’s Munze Osterreich won the Most Artistic category for the Coin of the Year (COTY) awards for 2024-dated coins. The 20 Euro silver Supernova coin (KM3378) is the first in the mint’s “The Beauty of the Universe” series.
The coin features a waved edge and a convex reverse, which represents the explosion of a supernova. It was designed by Mag. Helmut Andexlinger.
The concave obverse depicts the Crab Nebula, the remnant of the supernova observed in 1054, some 6,500 light years away from Earth.
With a convex reverse, the coin features a colored illustration of the Crab Nebula, based on an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
The Supernova coin weighs 22.42 grams, has a plain edge and measures 34 mm in diameter. Mintage is limited to 30,000.
