1792

This 1792 One Cent pattern, often referred to as the Silver Center Cent, is one of the earliest experimental coins produced by the newly established United States Mint. The obverse features a classical profile of Liberty, inspired by Greco-Roman ideals, symbolizing independence, civic virtue, and the philosophical foundations of the young republic. The reverse displays a wreath encircling the denomination, emphasizing unity and nationhood. A small silver plug embedded in the copper planchet was used to adjust the coin’s intrinsic value, reflecting early efforts to balance metal worth with face value. The coin embodies the formative moment of American monetary identity and the broader social ideals upon which the United States was founded.
