Lithuania Wins “Most Innovative” at 2020 COTY Awards for Four-Coin Set

Lithuania won the “Most Innovative” category at the 2020 Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards. The award-winning coin is actually a four-coin set commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence.

The set, dated 2018, includes one gold and three silver coins, which are dedicated to signatories, diplomacy, the legal system, armed forces, and militarized organizations. All four coins were designed by Liudas Parulskis and minted at the Lithuanian Mint. The obverse of each coin features an element of the image of Vytis, coat of arms of Lithuania. When all the coins are joined together, they form a single image of Vytis. The obverse also includes the inscriptions LIETUVA (LITHUANIA), 1918 VASARIO 16-OJI (16 FEBRUARY 1918), the year of issue (2018) as well as the denomination (€50) and the mintmark of the Lithuanian Mint. 

The 20 Euro silver coin is dedicated to the legal system. Its reverse includes the following inscriptions: 1918 11 02 LIETUVOS VALSTYBĖS KONSTITUCIJOS PAMATINIAI DĖSNIAI (THE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF LITHUANIA); 1918 11 11 PIRMOJI LIETUVOS VYRIAUSYBĖ (THE FIRST GOVERNMENT OF LITHUANIA); 1918 12 03 TEISMŲ IR ADVOKATŪROS VEIKLOS PRADŽIA (BEGINNING OF THE ACTIVITIES OF COURTS AND THE LITHUANIAN BAR ASSOCIATION); 1920 05 15 STEIGIAMASIS SEIMAS (CONSTITUENT SEIMAS); 1922 08 01 LIETUVOS RESPUBLIKOS KONSTITUCIJA (THE CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA).

The 10 Euro silver coin is dedicated to the armed forces. The reverse includes the following inscriptions: 1918 11 23 LIETUVOS KARIUOMENĖS ĮKŪRIMAS (THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LITHUANIAN ARMY); 1919 06 27 ŠAULIŲ SĄJUNGOS ĮKŪRIMAS (THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LITHUANIAN RIFLEMEN’S UNION); 1918–1920 LIETUVOS NEPRIKLAUSOMYBĖS KOVOS (FIGHTS FOR THE INDEPENDENCE OF LITHUANIA); 1919 02 10 JIEZNAS; 1919 11 21–22 RADVILIŠKIS; 1920 11 17–21 GIEDRAIČIAI–ŠIRVINTOS.

The 5 Euro coin is dedicated to diplomacy. The gold coin is dedicated to signatories. The reverse features the facsimile signatures of the signatories to the Act of Independence of Lithuania who signed the historical document of the Council of Lithuania on 16 February 1918, announcing the re-establishment of the State of Lithuania.
The mintage of each coin is limited to 4,000 pieces.
